Monday Check-In after being Snowed-In
This weekend we got a snow storm, I’m sure you heard about it. Nemo was international news, Boston was paralyzed, and in terms of physical activity for the weekend, I supposed I was as close to being paralyzed as any healthy (non-quadriplegic) twenty-two year old can be. We got 28 inches of wet, heavy snow, and with everything closed and the trains not running, I had a wonderful weekend of wine-drinking, game-playing, and Gilmore Girls-watching with snowed-in friends. It’s kind of nice when Mother Nature makes an excuse for you, but a whole weekend has left me feeling kind of sluggish. After the initial fun wore off, I started asking my friends to do pilates with me. I got a serious case of cabin fever and by Sunday, I was happy to be outside, even if it was a challenge trekking through dirty slush and Davis Square’s massive snow banks.
In terms of the past week, I am happy to report I’ve been pretty good in terms of sticking with my diet and exercise routine. After looking at my habits and excessive tendencies, I cut out beer, unnecessary dining-out, and dairy on a trial-basis. I made sure to get in my swim workouts, and my hard work paid off last Weigh-In Wednesday. I lost five pounds!
I have really noticed a difference in my swimming. After a year of trying to like running, I have found that I really love swimming. I’ve been swimming 3-4 times a week for the past couple months, and from where I could only swim a few laps without stopping, I am now at the place where I can swim a mile in under forty minutes, and a full half-hour without stopping to catch my breath or take a break. I feel stronger, and this is a place I’ve honestly never gotten to from working out. I’ve never stuck to one specific training schedule long enough to feel the effects. I’ve always lost a few pounds and then gotten distracted. I’m really excited about this progress, even more so than the weight I lost last week, because it feels real. I can only get stronger from here.
This week I have a goal to go for at least one run in addition to my regular swimming schedule. I have been signed up for the B.A.A. 5k, again, and I am dedicated to the idea of training this time around. And as I have a reputation as the girl-who-cried-training, I have to reiterate my 2013 promise to follow-through, because this time I won’t let myself down.
