Last night I was really itching for a run—and for a long run. I hadn’t gotten out at all since last week so I’ve had a lot of pent-up energy, and also there is always that feeling in the background about putting up poor numbers on Wednesday.
So with that, I slipped on some socks, got the dog harnessed in, and took her out. With Audrey, I was only able to do a solid one kilometer before she quit on me, which was alright because I didn’t want to overdo running in only socks.
Yes, I went out in just socks. I’ve been wanting to check my form and the best way to do that is to go for a run with no shoes. Unfortunately it is pretty chilly, so I got some of my wool socks out, and they worked pretty well until they got damp . . . that was uncomfortable.
After one kilometer, I trotted back home with the dog and slipped back into my Vibrams. I noticed that I run with approximately the same form, so I didn’t worry too much about it. Heading back outside with Pandora cranked loud to Ingrid Michaelson, I did about three or four kilometers, but it just wasn’t working. Maybe it was too many slow, lovey-dovey songs in a row. . . my lesbo-rock station just wasn’t cutting.
Spotlight up on Ke$ha.
I flipped my Pandora to Ke$ha radio, and off I went. The nice thing about this station is it really has most of the party dance club rap and hip-hop on it. All fast-paced, most with lyrics that make me giggle. At about 6 km, I realized I was still going. My feet hurt, but I adjusted my form and kept going, thinking I had a little bit left. And then, a song came on. Grow a Pear by Ke$ha.
Now, I am not proud of this, but that song amped me up. Honestly, how can these lyrics not amp you up (also not safe for work . . . or my mom?):

I mean, it is not the most eloquent of songs . . . but hey, when you are playing the mental game of pushing forward in your run through the cold, rain, and pain, that last line really sticks with you.
I ended up doing 10 km total last night. I am a bit sore, but honestly my lungs were good and my legs were good. My major aches and pains were my feet. More importantly, my left Achilles is still really struggling.
I only paused once last night at about 2.5 km to stretch my Achilles out, and I realized how important it was that if you are tight mid-run to pull up, take the five minutes to stretch before you continue. I felt astronomically better afterward, and felt less likely to get hurt.
It felt good to throw down a big run, but honestly I would rather do consistent, shorter runs all week than feel the need to go big or go home. I felt like the risk of injury was higher last night as I wanted to keep pushing, which was dumb on my part to go for it.
