First post of 2012, woo!

I just wanted to do a quick post today encouraging everyone to embrace the new year. I know it is a little bit cliché to make a weight loss resolution, a self-improvement resolution. Instead I really want people to just look at where they are, and where they want to be. Once we’ve done that, let’s go for it. No need for a big production. Time to just put our noses to the grindstone and get it done.

The change of the calendar year always brings an influx of people to the gym, which I can admit is more than a little frustrating. I can say I am not a huge fan of the gym, just because I love running outside more, but as the temperature is going into the teens and below, I am going to have to start throwing in some treadmill work.    Not so lucky for me, the row of treadmills are almost always occupied, especially after new years. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love that people want to kick start their health and get to the gym… I just wish they would not over sell memberships!

Anyway.

I think it really is important to set some reasonable goals, but I think it is also important not to set yourself up to fail. A reasonable weight loss goal can be about 1 to 2 pounds a week, and even that is tough to maintain as I am finding out. Fitness is a life long struggle, and it takes a life long commitment. Make your goals,  make them reasonable, and start working on them. Slow and steady really does win the race.

Keep in mind there will always be bumps in the road. I am going through a pretty decent one this past week. I’ve been pretty sick and on antibiotics, so my running has gone out the window. I guess I’ll just consider it a rest week. The important thing for me is to get back on the wagon as soon as possible and keep pushing. Honestly, that is where this blog has really helped me. Every time I get closer to Wednesday I really want to push myself out the door and get a few more miles in. The accountability I have felt has been a great motivator.

I am looking forward to a great 2012 full of running and nonsensical ramblings, and I hope all of you will feel compelled to get moving and hopefully track progress with us. We’ve got a long way to run before we hit Boston and swing south! As always, weekly tracking is due tonight or at the latest tomorrow morning, and tomorrow starts a fresh week of runs. Lets make the first full week of 2012 huge!
