Yesterday marked the first day of many more days to come where Ellie kicked my butt. We got home from the gym after a little over an hour of working out, only to start right into some ab workouts. The real kicker was the fact that I haven’t done anything even remotely close to ab workouts in several years. She led me through a whole routine, along with some leg strengthening, pilates-like exercises. Though it was only a half hour total, I finished exhausted. My legs hurt, my abs really hurt, and I just felt so out of shape. I may be able to run five to six miles with relative ease . . . but do twenty-five bicycle crunches? No way.

To sum up, I haven’t been this sore all over in a long time.

As I get closer and closer to my target-weight goal of 185, I’m starting to realize that I may hit that mark and still not be in the shape that I want. A person’s overall weight clearly isn’t everything. Being lighter doesn’t mean being in good shape. As Brian wrote some time ago, I will still be and will still feel skinny-fat. To solve this, Ellie Boot Camp commences.

I’ve never been a huge fan of ab workouts—or really anything that makes me get on the floor and work different muscles, for that matter. I’m always uncomfortable, and it just isn’t very much fun at all. Yesterday wasn’t too bad in reality; Ellie kept the directions flowing at a quick pace so I didn’t have time to wallow in my own misery, but I think it is safe to say it isn’t on my list of favorite things to do.

There were a couple of things that made me happy while we worked out. I really felt like I was working different muscles that had lay dormant for years, and that felt kind of good. Also, at one point, my dog Audrey hopped up from her bed and strolled over to Ellie’s yoga mat. She proceeded to stretch her legs out in a perfect yoga-like pose, held it for a few seconds, and then shuffled back to lie down. She knew what was up.

At the end of the day, I am excited to work these different muscle groups because I have worked hard to get the excess weight off. I think a little bit more effort will go a long way in making me not dread the upcoming beach season. Hopefully now that I’ve lost most of my spare tires, the ab workouts will actually show something!
