Do you ever have those days where all you want to do is sleep? You didn’t get to bed early enough last night, and your 7am alarm is too loud and disrupting the really great dream where you’ve been selected as the next Seeker for Ravenclaw house. You wake up groggy, head and eyelids heavy, and it takes all of your strength to get to the coffee pot. Next you sit at work for eight hours, and the last thing you want to do is go for a run when the clock hits 5. So you don’t. You go home and watch TV, which only makes your fatigue worse. You go to bed late and go through the same routine the next day. It’s really hard to break out of this pattern, but it is surprisingly easy to maintain once you do.
All you have to do is go for a run, or for a bike ride, or for a swim to break out. Muster the strength to get in thirty minutes of activity, and not only will you feel loads better, but you will be able to sleep. Getting in a solid eight hours (not justifying six) actually makes a huge difference. Putting on your sneakers to get in a run is so much easier when you can think of things other than taking a nap. It’s so much better when you aren’t forcing yourself to push your body when it is too exhausted.
The best thing you can do for your body is sleep. Not too much, like I am prone to do on weekends, but getting in some solid pillow time is important, especially when you’re trying to keep up with a training schedule. Going to bed at 10:30 instead of 12:30 isn’t that hard, and it makes all the difference the next day. Maybe everyone knows this because they’ve been working for a while, and I’m just realizing because I’m 22, but that is my advice for anyone struggling with adding workouts to their every-day. Sleep.
